ERROR ABORT in subroutine HRBEIS

Thank you.
I used the posted input from the 2017 platform.

@eyth.alison @cjcoats @cgnolte
There is an issue with the “B3GRD” intermediate file that comes with the 2017 NEI SMOKE modeling files. I ran SMOKE for the 12US1 domain using emissions and meteorology data inputs from EPA’s data storage https://gaftp.epa.gov/Air/emismod/2017/ and https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1pU9bXL4Xrs_EWVaGNz3Os4WbtcWCoEmG for the month of July. When it comes to running the biogenic sector, SMOKE reports the following error:

*** ERROR ABORT in subroutine HRBEIS
LAI= 308.10 out of range at (C,R)= 96, 1
Date and time 0:00:00 July 1, 2017 (2017182:000000)

I checked the “B3GRD” file and found that this file has these values for the following variables at (96,1) grid cell:
LAI_ISOPS = 308.103
LAI_MBOS = -103.389
LAI_METHS = -196.996

Are these values typical for the LAI variables? If not, what’s the best way to create the new “B3GRD” file using the 2017 NEI data?

The solution suggested above of using “B3GRD” file from 2016 does solve the issue. However, the produced biogenic emissions files are different from the 2017 premerged biogenic emissions file produced by EPA’s smoke run.

The error is regarding the b3grd file. You can turn off the normbeis running in the run setting and copy the model-ready b3grd file (from EPA) into your intermediate folder and then run the tmpbeis program. You can find the b3rgd file here:
https://gaftp.epa.gov/Air/emismod/2017/ancillary_data
Once you download the ancillary data, look into the “2017gb_17j/intermed/beis” folder. I hope it works for you.

@ali.mousavi.nezhad90 Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, It does not work. The file you are suggesting is the one I was already using. Turning off run_normbeis does not solve the issue.

Apologies – it seems we had the wrong b3grd posted under 2017 platform ancillary data.

Here is an updated file:

https://gaftp.epa.gov/Air/emismod/2017/ancillary_data/ge_dat_for_2017gb_beis_28may2021.zip

Hopefully this helps…

@eyth.alison The updated file fix the issue. I can now replicate EPA beis premerged files. Thank you for your help !

Thank you for letting us know – glad that it worked.

Hi Alison,

If I run SMOKE using other domain (e.g. US12km but not 12US1), could I use these files to run beis?

Thanks

I’m not exactly sure what you are asking. Which other domain – 12US2? Something else?

I’d have to check to see if the biogenic files automatically adjust – but you can probably figure it out by testing…

Hi Alison,
Thank you for the reply.
I used ‘US12KM_444X336’, ! 12km national US
‘LAM_40N97W’, -2736.D3, -2088.D3, 12.D3, 12.D3, 444, 336, 1

I ran it and has this error, so I asked here.

 *** ERROR ABORT in subroutine HRBEIS
 LAI=    308.10 out of range at (C,R)= 96,  1
 Date and time  0:00:00   June 1, 2017    (2017152:000000)

Is this based on met data you generated? Has that data been quality assured looking for invalid / unreasonable values?

Regarding the domain ‘US12KM_444X336’, ! 12km national US
‘LAM_40N97W’, -2736.D3, -2088.D3, 12.D3, 12.D3, 444, 336,

This is not one of our standard domains. Do you have a picture of your grid? It looks like it may be in between the EPA 12US1 and 12US2 grids?

12US1 = ‘LAM_40N97W’, -2556000, -1728000, 12.D3, 12.D3, 459, 299, 1

12US2 = ‘LAM_40N97W’, -2412000, -1620000, 12.D3, 12.D3, 396, 246, 1
