As on the survey of 2024, it’s consideration that MPAS is the next advancement of WRF,
but i am wondering, how MCIP will handle the output of MPAS for CMAQ?
therefore a clear view is necessary before transitioning to use of MPAS.
On the other hand, the I/O API does provide MODULE MPASFIO with routines and data structures that make the complex tasks of creating, reading, and writing MPAS files, and doing MPAS-grid related computations (such as interpolation). It also provides M3Tools programs mpasdiff, mpasstat, and mpastom3 for doing statistics, differencing, and interpolating data to GRIDDED I/O API files…
Note further that simple interpolation of meteorology fields “does the wrong thing” and gives decidedly not conservative wind fields.
Thanks for your quick reply. With your explanation I have understood some of the content of the MPAS model.
By the way, can you explain to me clearly how CMAQ and SMOKE will use the MPAS output result files or we also need some kind of meteorological data processing program similar to MCIP for CMAQ and SMOKE.
In the current release of MPAS-CMAQ, there is no need to use MCIP because MPAS and CMAQ are run together (not in a sequence). However, we are considering whether a regional version of MPAS would be of value and/or interest to the CMAQ community. We are exploring the viability of regional MPAS run in a sequence with CMAQ (much like sequential WRF). If that sequential MPAS and CMAQ system were developed, then MCIP (or another processor) would be developed to handle the translation of variables.
To the point raised by @cjcoats, I do not necessarily recommend interpolation from the MPAS structure to a rectilinear grid as a shortcut. We recognize that creating domains in MPAS is a complicated process, and (ideally) we will have methods to create global domains with regional “cut-outs” that can preserve the conservative properties that are foundational for CMAQ.
Thank you for the provided valuable informations.
I think this is the necessary information for the next steps in the field of environmental pollution research in our country.
