I am currently using WRF 3.8 to simulate meteorological fields as input for SMOKE to allocate the emissions inventory, followed by running CMAQ 5.4. I would like to ask if this combination — an older version of WRF with a newer version of CMAQ — is feasible and reasonable?
It is normal in the CMAQ community as the WRF upgrades much sooner than CMAQ. Once you get reasonable meteorology simulations from WRF, then you are good for CMAQ. On the contrary, the MCIP may be not compatible with the newest WRF version.
In general, WRF4.1.1 is recommended due to a known issue in WRF version earlier than 4.1 (which is the land mask issue in WPS).
