Replicating ptnonipm sector emission found in EPA's 2021 Platform : number of species are about half

Dear SMOKE users

I have a question about EPA’s 2021 Platform (https://2021platform.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html#2021platform/ ) CMAQ ready SMOKE output.

We are specifically looking into replicating the ptnonipm sector of above link using the 2021 Emissions platform scripts (https://gaftp.epa.gov/Air/emismod/2021/) and we are noticing some inconsistencies on the produced INLN files.

These are mainly HAPS species missing from our files and the size (the number of species) is about half. We believe this is due to a different gspro/gsref not available on our emissions platform setup (also possibly slightly different inventories?).

Can someone help us identify/point to the files needed to replicate the platform input/sector?

We use SMOKE 5.1 on AWS and can attach our onetime run-script. (modified from the 2021 emissions platform)

Thanks

I believe the posted files do include more HAPs than the traditional CAP-focused cases. The provided scripts will produce the species that you need for CAP-focused (ozone / PM) modeling. So you don’t need to reproduce the additional species. Have you been able to get good agreement for the CAP species?

Also note that we packaged scripts as-is for this case and included INVTABLE and other speciation files for both HAP+CAP and CAP-focused cases.

Hi Alison

Thank you for your reply.

We have successfully replicated the CAP species and found identical results (as expected, HAPS like benzene were different).

We then ran the ptnonipm scripts with the gspro & invtable from the emissions platform hapcap directories, and were able to replicate all HAP species with identical results (for benzene for example that we are interested in) - except “DIESEL_PMC” species missing in the daily output.

We just wonder whether it is an issue with the gsref file (couldn’t find an entry for DIESEL_PMC in “gsref_cmaq_cb6ae7_2021hb_cb6_21k_nf.txt” or any other “gsref_” file).

About another issue: DIESEL_PMC specie missing in the output:

The only “DIESEL_PMC” species is missing in our daily output file. As I am building scenarios looking at health impacts of the ptnonipm sector, I want to make sure that I stay aligned to the CMAQ platform.

I just wonder whether the missing “DIESEL_PMC” species in my ptnonipm emissions will affect my estimates.

The missing DIESEL_PMC specie should not impact your results unless you are doing full HAP+CAP modeling, that is not typical.

Thank you for your reply and help.

We will proceed with the CMAQ simulations using the 2021 Platform and will post here if we need to know anything more.
